[1] MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
This interactive will run on any computer meeting the following
specifications:
Apple Macintosh LC 575 or better
8 MB of RAM (at least 5mb available for applications)
Macintosh System 7.1 or later
640x480 display, in 256 colours*
Double speed CD-ROM drive
QuickTime system extension installed and enabled
Note: These are the minimum computer requirements to run this interactive
successfully. The specifications given are for optimally configured
systems.
Performance on individual systems may vary. For further assistance,
includingsuggestions on how to optimise your system configuration, consult section three of this document and/or the documentation that came with your system.
*Devils Canyon: A Dinamation Adventure will operate best in 256 colours.
You may choose to run the interactive in thousands of colours - this
requires more memory to be available for the interactive, so use the "Devils Canyon (12Mb)" application if you have more than 12 Mb RAM available. Likewise, if you have 16MB available, use the "Devils Canyon (16MB) version of the application.
[2] GETTING STARTED
1. When the "Devils Canyon" window opens, double-click on the "Devils
Canyon" icon appropriate for the RAM on your system.
[3] QUICK KEYS
The following mouse/key functions are available:
Skip QuickTime Movies = <ctrl>-double click
Skip Host Voice Over = click on host in monitor or hold down <ctrl> key
Quit Program = <cmd>-Q, <opt>-Q, or <ctrl>-Q
Print Functions:
Preview = hold down <ctrl> while selecting Print
Print Whole Activity = hold down <shift> key while selecting Print
[4] IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
The best response and video performance is available if your display is
set to 640x480 resolution, in 256 colors.
Prior to using this CD-ROM, you should close all other applications,
particularly those using large amounts of memory. On some Macintosh
systems, performance may be improved by disabling AppleTalk in the Chooser, and by disabling Virtual Memory in the Memory Control Panel. Enabling disk caching will also improve performance.
If you have plenty of RAM available (12 Mb or more), run the "Devils
Canyon (12MB)" application on the CD; if you have a 16MB system, use the "Devils Canyon (16MB)" icon.
Your Macintosh should have a minimum of five megabytes of RAM available
after loading the system software, before you run any applications. You can find this out by choosing "About This Macintosh" from the Apple menu. Disabling or removing unnecessary system extensions will improve performance and memory usage.
Performance will often be improved if you are running System 7.5, with the
Apple Multimedia Tuner installed, which is provided as part of the QuickTime installation on the CD-ROM. If possible, you should have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your system. This interactive has been tested and found to be compatible with QuickTime 2.0. If you do not have a recent version of the QuickTime system extension, install it from the CD-ROM by opening the "QuickTime 2.0 for Mac" folder and copying the contents to your system folder. You will need to restart for QuickTime to be available to your system.
[5] SOUND CONFIGURATION
Ensure that the sound level of your system is set appropriately before
starting the interactive. You can adjust the sound output of your system
by using the Sound control panel within the interactive. For more
information, consult the documentation provided with your system.
[6] QUICKTIME INSTALLATION
To display digital video and photographs in this interactive, you must
have the QuickTime extension installed and enabled on your system. QuickTime is software provided by Apple to let your computer play movies. QuickTime for the Macintosh is provided as part of Macintosh System 7.0, and later versions.
It is also available on the CD-ROM, in the "QuickTime 2.0 for Mac" folder.
This interactive will not operate properly without QuickTime installed.
[7] TROUBLESHOOTING
Problem: Slow performance:
Possible Solution: Set your screen colours and resolution to 640x480, 256
colours.
Problem: You have a Power PC with 8MB RAM and the interactive will not
run:
Possible Solution: Drag the 8MB 'projector' for the interactive to your
desktop then use Get Info to reduce the amount of memory the projector requires to run in.
Problem: Printing from the interactive does not work:
Possible Solution: Close the interactive and try printing from a
word-processor or text editor. If that fails, check your printer settings and consult the documentation which came with your printer.
Problem: You experience difficulty viewing photographs or digital video on
this CD-ROM.
Possible Solutions: Make sure you have QuickTime installed on your system.
Turn off Virtual memeory in the Macintosh Control Panels/memory settings, and restart you Macintosh
Problem: If you experience screen corruption or other unusual behaviour:
Possible Solution: This may be the result of the activity of a program
(such as a screen saver) left open in the background. Disable it or prevent it's activation before using this CD-ROM.
Problem: If you experience sound or video skips and/or hesitations:
Possible Solution: This is normally a performance issue on your particular
system. Free up as much memory as you can and make sure you have shut
down other applications.
Problem: If you find the display too dark:
Possible Solution: Adjust the brightness and contrast of your monitor to
suit. Sometimes changing to a lower display resolution can help.
[8] USING THIS CD-ROM WITH OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS
This CD-ROM is designed to run on an Apple Macintosh computer, using
Macintosh System 7.1 or later; or on an Intel-based IBM-compatible system running Microsoft Windows. It should run without difficulty on the majority of personal computers meeting those requirements. It is not guaranteed to operate correctly (or at all) on other operating system and hardware platform combinations.
